Dog Hikes

Beverly Hills

Franklin Canyon Park
2600 Franklin Canyon Drive, Beverly Hills

With no mulitmillion-dollar mansions in sight, Franklin Canyon offers more than five miles of hiking trails that range from grasslands, woodlands and a three-acre lake, to a handicapped-accessible duck pond and expansive picnic grounds.

Calabasas

Las Virgenes View Park
At the intersection of Las Virgenes Road and Mulholland Highway, Calabasas

Standing as a sharp contrast to L.A.'s usual dry, rugged hikes, this park features rolling green grasslands, oak and sycamore tree-lined canyons bottoms and unspoiled vistas. (Hint: Take the Virgenes View Trail, a 2.4-mile path that winds its way up to an elevation of 1,100 feet, where you and your pooch cantake in the 360-degree views of the surrounding hills.)

Encino

Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness Park
17500 Mulholland Drive, Encino

This isn't as popular as some others, but with 1,500 acres of the Santa Monica Mountains to explore, there's plenty of space for dogs to run. Dogs are allowed off-leash here, provided they are under "owner's control" (i.e., you can stop your dog from harassing people or animals).

San Vicente Mountain Park
17500 Mulholland Drive, Encino

In addition to its network of wide, open trails, San Vicente Mountain Park also offers a bit of a history lesson: From 1965 to 1968, it was one of 16 Los Angeles-area Nike-Ajax supersonic anti-aircraft missle launch sites. Climb the original radar tower for views of the Santa Monica Montains, the Encino reservoir and San Fernando Valley, and the Los Angeles Basin. (Tip: There's not a lot of shade here, so bring sunscreen.)

Los Angeles

Runyon Canyon
North entrence is 2.6 miles east of Laurel Canyon Boulevard on Mulhullond Drive, Los Angeles

This is the hot spot for dogs and their people. Anyone who's anyone has been spotted trekking the half-mile-long paved trail up the canyon. Dogs are allowed off-leash on paved paths, but must be leashed on dirt trails. (Hint: It's almost always crowded with buetiful people - and their dogs - so wear something cute.)

Malibu

Zuma Canyon
Trail is at the end of Busch Drive, north of Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu

The main trail etches its way across the Malibu Mountain ridges and offers picturesque ocean views stretching from the Channel Islands to Catalina.

Pacific Palisades

Temescal Gateway Park
15601 Sunset Blvd., Pacific Palisades

Sharing its border (and views) with Topanga State Park, this 141-acre park features gently sloping dirt trails that climb towards stunning ridgetop views of the coast and surrounding mountains. (Caution: Once you and Fido reach the Topanga State Park boundary, turn around; dogs aren't allowed there.)

Studio City

Fryman Canyon
8401 Mullholland Drive, Studio City

Want to see urban sprawl at its most glistening? Fryman's 122-acre park has spectacular views of L.A., as well as a fitness course and clearly marked trails through shaded canyons.

No Dogs allowed in state parks
Melissa Heckscher - The Daily Breeze

Unfortunately for Fido, dogs aren't allowed on the trails at any California State Park (though depending on the park, they may be allowed in parking lots and picnic areas).
According to California State park Ranger Ken Low, the pooch prohibition helps protect the parks' natural recources.
"Dogs will affect wildlife patterns; they leave behind a scent that will deter some animals,' Low said. "And dogs can carry diseases such as parvo that can transfer to coyotes".
Low said dog owners should remember, if the name of the park has "state" in it (i.e., Topanga State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, Will Rogers State Park, Point Mugu State Park), its a no-dog zone.
Dogs are also prohibited in Channel Islands National Park, King Gillette Ranch, and most Los Angeles County Beaches.
If you bring your dog to a restricted area, be prepared to pay a fine, starting at $75.

California Canine Hikers organizes and leads day and evening hikes mainly in Los Angeles County foothills and mountains. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in participating.
